What we'll do

Reading Cafe Sci would like to extend a invitation to the Basingstoke Friends and Cafe Sci followers to attend this free talk. Tonight there will be a talk by Dr Ceri Brenner, the co-chair of the BSA Reading branch and a senior application development scientist at the Central Laser Facility, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire, specialising in using the most powerful lasers in the world for applications in medicine through to manufacturing. Ceri will present "Shining Bright: 3 reasons to celebrate 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics". She will be talking about the recent Nobel Prize in Physics and what it means to her and her field of research. The presentation will be followed by a Q and A session.

FREE ENTRY. Restaurant is open from 6pm

"On Tuesday 2nd October I jumped up from my desk and cheered. The Nobel Prize for Physics had just been announced for "ground-breaking inventions in the field of laser physics". The 2018 prize is a triple whammy of celebration for me, my colleagues at the Central Laser Facility, and my research community. Let me share these three cheers of celebration with you in a talk that introduces these now Nobel-worthy concepts, and explains why I ended that day in October talking about it on the BBC 10 o'clock News!"

Format and Venue:

Smokin' Billy's will be open for at least half an hour before the talk which starts at 7.30pm, so you can get yourself a drink and have a chat with other participants. The discussions will aim to finish around 9.00pm, though everyone will be welcome to stay around and have a chat with the speaker afterwards.

The format of the evening is usually a talk of 30 to 40 minutes, followed by a short break so the audience can refill their glasses, before questions and discussions about the talk. Entry is free and open to everyone, but we do encourage you to buy drinks to show your support for Smokin Billy's who sponsor the meeting by providing the venue.
